Xarelto® Injury Lawsuit
Little Rock Drug Injury Lawyer
Rivaroxaban, marketed under the brand name Xarelto®, is a prescription blood thinner designed to stop blood coagulation. Manufactured by Bayer and approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in July 2011, Xarelto is often given to patients who undergo joint replacement surgery or have non-valvular atrial fibrillation. Despite its wide use, Xarelto has been linked to an increased risk of serious bleeding, stroke, blood clots, and other side effects among certain types of patients. In August 2013, the FDA required Bayer to change the warning label on packages of Xarelto. Patients who stop taking the medication have a greater chance of experiencing thrombotic events, including spinal/epidural hematomas, pulmonary embolisms, and more.
If you or someone you love took Xarelto and developed any of these complications, you may be eligible for compensation. Contact our attorneys today for a free evaluation of your case.
Serious Xarelto® Side Effects
Health problems associated with Xarelto are potentially life-threatening and include:
- Spinal/Epidural Hematoma
A spinal/epidural hematoma can cause loss of consciousness, intense headaches, and even result in death. It occurs when blood builds up between the dura mater—or outer membrane of the central nervous system—and the skull. - Serious Bleeding Events
Uncontrollable bleeding can be very dangerous, often requiring extended hospitalization and sometimes resulting in death. Major bleeding events can include gastrointestinal bleeding, intracranial bleeding, brain aneurysm, hemorrhagic stroke, and more. - Heart Attack
A heart attack occurs when the heart doesn’t receive adequate blood flow, resulting in injury to the heart muscle. Heart attacks can cause chest pain, light-headedness, and death. - Stroke
A stroke occurs when there’s a lack of blood flow to the brain caused by a blockage or hemorrhage. Strokes can result in decreased motor skills, paralysis, numbness, and death. - Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
DVT occurs when a blood clot forms in a deep vein—most often in the legs. Complications of DVT include swelling of the legs, leg pain, and pulmonary embolism if the clot travels to the lungs. - Pulmonary Embolism
A pulmonary embolism occurs when a blood clot formed in the legs or pelvis travels to the lungs. Pulmonary embolisms can cause difficulty breathing, rapid heart rate, low blood pressure, and sudden death.

Patients with Xarelto® Health Risks
A 2013 study conducted by New York Medical College links Xarelto to an increased risk of bleeding among patients who:
- Are acutely ill and taking blood thinners to reduce the risk of blood clotting.
Researchers found a nearly three-fold increase in the rate of major bleeding among patients with acute medical illness. - Suffer from Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS).
Patients with ACS face more than triple the risk of major bleeding when taking Xarelto. - Undergo hip surgery.
Hip surgery patients who take Xarelto have almost double the risk of severe bleeding.
Unlike other blood thinners, such as warfarin (Coumadin®), there are no counteracting drugs for Xarelto and no way to reverse its effects. This can increase the risk of severe injury or death in the event of major bleeding.
