CALS Foundation in Honor of Scipio Jones
Scipio Jones is one of America’s greatest lawyers. Born into slavery in Dallas County, Jones became one of the first black lawyers in Little Rock. He then became a legend in American law for his role in establishing the fundamental relationship between the Supreme Court of the United States and state courts. His skillful defense before the U.S. Supreme Court of twelve unfairly charged sharecroppers who were sentenced to death by an Arkansas state court ended in the landmark decision of Moore v. Dempsey. Mr. Jones’ unique role in American law led the Congress to authorize his portrait to be placed in the U.S. Post Office named for him, 1800 Main Street in Little Rock. His biographical information will also be displayed at the post office so others can see just how he truly defined and embodied the Spirit of Arkansas. The CALS Foundation is raising the money for this portrait, and Rainwater, Holt & Sexton is thankful to be able to help honor such a great man.
