Arsenic-Laced Wines Prompt Defective Product Lawsuit
Food and beverage manufacturers are supposed to ensure the safety and purity of their products. Yet each year, thousands of products are released to the public that present serious health or safety risks.
The Little Rock defective product lawyers at Rainwater, Holt & Sexton point to recent lawsuits claiming dozens of California wines contain high levels of arsenic. The lawsuits name grocer Trader Joe’s and approximately two dozen California wineries as defendants.
According to Food Safety News, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency establishes a limit if 10 parts per billion (PPB) on the amount of arsenic that’s allowed in drinking water. While these limits do not apply to wine, researchers found that arsenic levels in the wines tested were as much as 500 percent higher than that limit.
The arsenic levels in more than 1,300 bottles of wine were examined by researchers and it was determined some bottles contained as much as 50 PPB of arsenic. Most of the bottles examined retailed for less than $10, making them a popular selection among consumers.
