Philips Recalled CPAP Devices Due To Cancer Risks
Medical device manufacturer Royal Philips announced a voluntary recall in June 2021 for several of its sleep apnea machines. Numerous reports indicate that the machine’s noise reduction foam may break down and release toxic gasses and particles into the mask that could poison the user, cause chronic respiratory illnesses, or even cause cancer.
Philips was alerted in April 2021 that the noise reduction foam in these devices can break down into particles, which can make their way into the airway portion of the device. Inhaling, ingesting, or otherwise absorbing these particles can increase your risk of lung cancer and other injuries.
Philips has advised that if you currently use the recalled CPAP and Bi-level PAP machines you should stop immediately and speak with your doctor about alternative devices to treat your sleep apnea. Do not do anything without consulting your physician if you use one of the recalled Philips CPAP, Bi-level PAP devices.
Over 3.5 million Philips Respironics CPAP and BiPAP machines were recalled in June 2021 due to the toxic sound prevention foam used in the breathing devices. The recall primarily affects the Philips CPAP machines from the first generation of its DreamStation© line. It also affects some of its Bi-level PAP machines and mechanical ventilators.
